The Day I Finally Took the Test

I almost didn’t take it.

Not because I didn’t want to.

Because I wasn’t sure I was ready.

For days, I kept telling myself the same thing.

“But… what if I can’t keep up with the listening?”

I wasn’t worried about understanding English.

I am just as comfortable speaking English as I am my native tongue.

I am mentoring people too.

Only that, I was worried about time.

The speed.

The pressure.

The little voice that whispers, “You’re going to freeze.”

Funny how our minds do that.

They rarely question the things we’ve spent years learning.

They question us at the exact moment we decide to prove it.

So I practiced.

Not just grammar.

Not just vocabulary.

I’ve taken countless Versant tests and other English assessments before.

But still, that initial feeling, that rush of nervous tension in anticipation every time.

It’s that natural fight-or-flight response activating before a major challenge.

So, I practiced answering questions with structure instead of panic.

I also learned that good writing isn’t about using the biggest words. It’s about guiding someone from one thought to the next.

Introduction.

Reason.

Example.

Conclusion.

Simple.

Clear.

Human.

When test day came, I still wasn’t completely confident.

And sure enough…

During the EF SET test…

The listening section humbled me.

I mumbled one answer.

I missed part of another.

My fingers couldn’t keep up with the timer.

Before I knew it…

The test submitted itself.

I sat there thinking,

“Well… that could have gone better.”

Almost instantly after, the results arrived.

C2 Proficient.

I stared at the screen for a while.

My EF SET result surprised me…

Not because I couldn’t believe the score.

Because I couldn’t believe how much time I had spent doubting myself.

The funniest part?

Even after earning a C2, my first thought wasn’t,

“I did it!”

It was,

“Coach… I’m ashamed of my B2 Listening.”

We laughed about that.

A lot.

Sometimes we’re so focused on the one imperfect number that we forget to celebrate everything that went right.

That day reminded me of something I’ve had to learn over and over again.

Growth doesn’t usually arrive wearing fireworks.

Sometimes it arrives disguised as a test you’ve been postponing.

Sometimes it’s hidden behind a timer that feels too fast.

Sometimes it looks like clicking “Start” while your hands are still shaking.

The certificate now sits quietly in my growing collection of milestones.

To someone else, it might just be another credential.

To me…

It’s proof that fear isn’t always a stop sign.

Sometimes…

It’s simply the door you have to walk through.

And maybe that’s the lesson I’ll remember years from now.

Not that I earned a C2.

But that I almost convinced myself not to try.

Reflection

Looking back, I don’t think this story is really about English.

It’s about all the moments in life where we wait until we feel “ready.”

Taking the EF SET English Certificate…

I’ve learned that readiness is overrated.

Preparation matters.

Practice matters.

But eventually, there comes a point where the only thing left to do is begin.

This time, I did.

What I Learned

I didn’t learn that my English was perfect.

I learned that fear has a funny way of disguising itself as preparation.

Sometimes we tell ourselves we’re “waiting until we’re ready.”

But the truth is…

We’re waiting until we’re no longer scared.

This time, I decided to start before that happened.

I’m glad I did.

And I’m really glad I did. 💙
